I disagree with you; it isn’t inferring that one needs friends. It’s replacing the word “gay” with “gamer guy who has more videogames than friends,” and in doing so, it is turning something that should not be used as an insult into one. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having more videogames than friends, just like there is absolutely nothing wrong with being gay. I think it gets the point across, even though they used a completely ridiculous example.
